Textiles, Dyes & Pigments

In colour, the thing being bought is reproducibility. A shade that matches the standard on one lot and drifts on the next costs more than the material did, and the cause is usually a specification that described purity but not consistency.

What decides the specification

  1. 01

Technical grade is a specification, not an absence of one

Dye intermediates are supplied to technical grade, which means the specification is set by what the process needs rather than by a pharmacopoeia or an analytical standard. That makes it more important, not less, to write down what you are holding the material to.

  2. 02

Shade reproducibility is a lot-consistency question

Colour strength and hue respond to minor variation in the intermediate. If your shade is matched against a standard, say so on the enquiry and say whether you need continuity across repeat orders — it changes what should be supplied.

  3. 03

    State the end use

Textile, pigment and coatings applications hold the same intermediate to different things. Naming the process narrows the specification faster than a list of numbers.

Where to look

The catalogue is on the TSS storefront and is searchable by name and CAS number.

What to put on the enquiry

These four turn an enquiry into something that can be quoted without a round trip.

  • The intermediate by name or CAS number, and the quantity.
  • The end process — textile dyeing, pigment manufacture, coatings.
  • Whether the shade is matched to a standard, and whether you need lot continuity.
  • The destination country.

Common questions

What does technical grade mean for a dye intermediate?
That the specification is set by what the process requires rather than by a pharmacopoeial monograph or an analytical standard. It is a real specification — it simply has to be written down for the particular application rather than referenced to a published one.
How do I specify for shade reproducibility?
Say on the enquiry that the shade is matched to a standard, name the end process, and say whether you need continuity of lot across repeat orders. Those three tell us more than an assay figure on its own.
