
A plating bath is a tuned system. What upsets it is rarely the headline assay of a salt — it is a trace metal at a few parts per million, or a lot that sits a fraction away from the last one. Consistency is the specification that matters here.
Bath chemistry is sensitive to contaminants far below the level a general purity figure describes. Two lots can both meet the same assay and behave differently because of what else is in them. If your process has trace-metal limits, state them — an assay figure on its own does not answer the question.
A process qualified against one supply behaves predictably as long as that supply does. Changing to a nominally purer material can still mean requalifying. Where a process is running well, continuity of specification is usually the more valuable thing to buy.
The Certificate of Analysis is issued for the batch supplied. On a process where a bad addition costs a tank, it is worth reading before the material goes in rather than after.
