What decides the purchase

The compound is usually fixed by the route. These are the things that vary between suppliers and between lots.

  1. Titre, not nominal concentration

    A 2.0 M solution is nominal. The useful figure is the titre — the measured concentration, with the date it was measured. Organolithiums in particular decay in solution, and a bottle opened repeatedly decays faster. For anything where stoichiometry matters, titrate on receipt and again if the bottle has been standing; the reagent is cheap relative to the batch it is being charged into.

  2. The solvent is part of the reagent

    Methylmagnesium bromide in diethyl ether and in THF are different reagents in practice: different reactivity, different temperature range, different workup. Substituting one for the other because it is what was in stock changes the chemistry. Specify the solvent, and check it against the procedure rather than the compound name.

  3. Packaging determines shelf life more than the material does

    These ship in septum-sealed bottles under nitrogen or argon, or in Sure/Seal-type containers designed for cannula transfer. Once the septum is pierced repeatedly the inert atmosphere is compromised and the contents begin to degrade regardless of storage temperature. Buying smaller units more often costs more per gram and less per failed batch.

  4. Pyrophoric handling is a purchasing constraint, not only a safety one

    Several reagents in this class ignite on contact with air, which restricts how they can be shipped, what quantities can be sent by which mode, and what your site must have in place to receive them. Establish that the destination can accept and store the material before ordering — this is the class where a delivery can be refused at the door.

Questions

Why should I titrate a solution that came with a certificate?
Because the certificate reports the concentration at manufacture, and organometallic solutions decay — slowly if sealed and stored cold, considerably faster once the septum has been pierced and the headspace exchanged. For a reaction where the reagent is charged stoichiometrically, using the label figure on a bottle that has been open for a month is how a batch ends up under- or over-charged.
Can these be shipped by air?
Several cannot, and others only in limited quantities under dangerous-goods provisions. Pyrophoric and water-reactive materials carry transport restrictions that vary by mode and by destination. It is worth raising the delivery route at enquiry rather than at despatch, because it sometimes changes the practical unit size or the lead time substantially.
What does Sure/Seal packaging give me?
A bottle designed for repeated withdrawal under inert atmosphere via cannula or syringe, with a septum and crimped seal that maintains the blanket gas between uses. It extends usable life significantly compared with a plain septum bottle, provided the technique is right. It is not a substitute for titrating before a stoichiometric charge.
