What decides the purchase

The compound is usually fixed by the route. These are the things that vary between suppliers and between lots.

  1. Sublimed grade exists because ordinary purity is not enough

    Sublimation purifies by vaporising the compound and recondensing it, leaving involatile impurities behind. It is the standard route to the purity organic electronics needs, and material is often sold as once-, twice- or triple-sublimed. If a device specification depends on mobility or lifetime, sublimed grade is not an upgrade — it is the specification.

  2. Batch variation shows up as device performance, not as assay

    The impurities that matter here are frequently below the detection limit of the assay that produced the certificate, yet they determine trap density in a working device. This is why groups qualify a batch by building devices from it rather than by reading the certificate, and why reserving a qualified batch for the length of a study is worth arranging.

  3. Oxygen and light degrade the material before you use it

    Many conjugated organics photo-oxidise, and the degradation begins in the container. They ship in amber glass, foil pouches, or under inert gas for exactly this reason. Once opened, storage in a glovebox is usually necessary rather than cautious. A material that has sat on a shelf in room light is not the material on the certificate.

  4. Solubility decides whether it can be printed at all

    Solution processing requires the compound to dissolve adequately in a solvent compatible with the substrate and the deposition method. High-performing materials are frequently the least soluble. Where the process is printing rather than evaporation, solubility in the intended solvent is a purchasing criterion alongside purity.

Questions

What does twice-sublimed actually mean?
That the material has been through two cycles of vacuum sublimation, each removing involatile and less volatile impurities. Each pass improves purity and reduces yield, which is why the price rises steeply with sublimation count. For OLED and transistor work the sublimed grades are standard; for solution-processed devices where the film is less sensitive, an unsublimed grade is sometimes adequate.
Why does device performance vary between batches of the same purity?
Because the assay behind a purity figure does not detect the impurities that matter most in a device. A trap-forming species at a few parts per million is invisible to HPLC at typical sensitivity and decisive for charge transport. This is why device-level qualification of a batch is common practice in the field, and why batch reservation for a study is worth asking about.
How should these materials be stored once opened?
Under inert atmosphere, dark, and ideally in a glovebox for the more sensitive conjugated compounds. Photo-oxidation is cumulative and irreversible, and it proceeds in ordinary room light. If glovebox storage is not available, small unit sizes used quickly are a better arrangement than a large container opened repeatedly.
