What decides the purchase

The compound is usually fixed by the route. These are the things that vary between suppliers and between lots.

  1. Concentration and assay are different numbers

    Concentrated hydrochloric acid is nominally 37% but supplied within a range, and it loses HCl on standing once opened. If a procedure depends on the exact molarity, standardise on receipt or buy a volumetric-standard grade where the concentration is certified. Treating the label figure as exact is the commonest source of a titration that will not reconcile.

  2. Trace metals decide the grade far more often than assay does

    For electronics, catalysis or anything feeding a pharmaceutical elemental-impurity limit, the relevant specification is metal content at ppb, not acid strength at two decimal places. Semiconductor and trace-metal grades exist for exactly this and cost several times the AR equivalent. Buying AR because the assay looked adequate is a false economy in those applications.

  3. Packaging has to survive the contents

    Hydrofluoric acid attacks glass and must ship in fluoropolymer. Concentrated nitric degrades many plastics. Strong bases etch glass slowly and seize ground-glass joints. The container is part of the specification, not a shipping detail, and a grade you cannot store safely is not usable however good the certificate.

  4. Hydroxides carbonate, and the certificate ages

    Sodium and potassium hydroxide absorb carbon dioxide from the air, converting surface material to carbonate. A pellet drum opened repeatedly drifts from its certificate within weeks. Where carbonate matters — in a standardised solution, or a reaction sensitive to it — buy smaller units more often rather than one large drum, and ask about the carbonate limit rather than assuming it.

Questions

What does trace metal grade actually mean?
A grade specified on metallic impurity content rather than on assay — typically with named metals limited at parts per billion and reported by ICP-MS on the certificate. It exists for applications where a trace metal is catalytically or electronically consequential even though it is invisible in the assay figure. The acid strength of a trace-metal grade is usually no better than AR; what you are buying is the absence of metals.
Why can hydrofluoric acid not ship in glass?
HF dissolves silica, so a glass container is attacked by its own contents — the acid is consumed, the container is weakened and dissolved silicon compounds contaminate the material. It ships in fluoropolymer such as PTFE or HDPE instead. This is a handling requirement rather than a preference, and it applies to storage vessels and labware as much as to the shipping container.
How should a buffer be specified?
By the buffering species, the pH required and the temperature at which that pH applies — most buffers shift with temperature, and Tris notably so. State whether you need the acid, the base or a ready-made buffered salt, and whether the pH must be certified rather than nominal. For biological work, add the endotoxin or nuclease requirement, since these are separate specifications from chemical purity.
